Notes |
- Tom worked in banking in Ingersoll, ON, where the family lived on Thomas Street. In 1913, he moved his family back to Guelph and they initially stayed with his parents on Queen Street, while they built their home at 7 Ardmay Crescent, up the top of Eramosa Hill. Ethel lived in the house until shortly before her death in 1976. Tom later became the Managing Director of Northern Rubber. He retired from there approximately four years prior to unexpected and early death in 1942. During WWII Northern Rubber was a strategic industry. Tom's death was not something that Ethel ever moved past. She never remarried. Instead she focused her attention on her son and grandson, and later great-granddaughters. Ethel adored her grandson, Ian Kennedy. She traveled often with her son and his family and spent a great deal of time taking her grandson to the opera, of which she was a huge fan and attended as often as she could. Ethel's father's family, the CONNs were from the Talbot Road area of Elgin Township and the MORDENs were from the Dundas area. Her mother's family, the RYCKMANs were from the Flamboro area and the CARPENTERs were from the Saltfleet area outside of Hamilton. The family had moved to Detroit in late 1892/1893 after the failure of John Conn & John Ryckman's private banking business in Alvinston, Ontario. In Detroit, John Conn and one of his brother went into the paving contracting business. Ethel attended the Milwaukee-Downer College. She met her best friend, Irma Grassler, there. Irma's brother attended the Michigan Military Academy with Ethel's brother, Gordon.
