So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

John Alden was among the original settlers of the Plymouth Colony. Although not himself a Separatist he had been hired to repair Mayflower while she lay off Southampton, England and decided to journey when she set sail, perhaps with the hope of being prosperous in the New World. He fell in love and married a beautiful girl named Priscilla Mullins after that first harsh winter.
John became very important in the colonies and from 1633 until 1675, he was assistant to the governor of the Plymouth Colony, frequently serving as acting governor and also on many juries.
An interesting storyin his life was when in 1634, Alden was jailed, in Boston, for a fight at Kenebeck, Maine between members of the Plymouth Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. While Alden did not participate in the fight (which left one person dead) he was the highest-ranking member from Plymouth that the Massachusetts Bay colonists found to arrest. It was hard on him because he was not guilty and it was only through the intervention of Governor Bradford that he was eventually released.
John Alden was the last male survivor of the signers of the Mayflower Compact, and with exception of Mary Allerton, wife of Thomas Cushman, who was the last survivor of all the company, though she was just little during that first winter that took 1/2 the lives of those who travelled to the New World, he was also the last survivor of the Mayflower's company. He died at Duxbury on September 12, 1687. He left no will, having disposed most of his real estate during his lifetime. Both he and his wife Priscilla lie buried in the Miles Standish Burial Ground.
The Alden residence is also in Duxbury, on the north side of the village, on a farm which is still in possession of their descendants of the seventh generation. He made no will, having distributed the greater part of his estate among his children during his lifetime.
John and Priscilla had 11 children who survived to adulthood: Elizabeth, John (accused during the Salem witch trials), Joseph, Priscilla, Robert, Jonathan, Sarah, Ruth, Mary, Rebecca, and David. They have many descendants today who can be proud of their ancestry.
