    • Obituary: The Salt Lake Tribune, Monday, October 27, 1958 Mrs. Edna Melissa Smith Bowman, 78, 28 N. State, daughter of Joseph F. Smith , sixth president, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Sunday at 5 a.m. at her residence of natural causes. Mrs. Bowman was the wife of John F. Bowman, prominent retired attorney in Salt lake City and mayor of the city from 1928 to 1932. She was a gradaughter of Hyrum Smith, martyred brother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, founder of the LDS Church. She was also a sister of Joesph Fielding Smith, president of the church's Council of Twelve Apostles. She was active as an executive officer in YWMIA and primary organizations of Granit LDS Stake and in the Relief Society of Granit, Hillside and Ensign stakes. With her husband, she presided of the Central States LDS mission from 1939 to 1943 as head of the Relief Society. MRS. BOWMAN was also active in the Service Star organization and in other civic affairs. She was born Oct. 6, 1879 in Salt Lake City, to Joseph F. and Edna Lambson Smith. She was married to Mr. Bowman on Jan. 27, 1903, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Surviving Mrs. Bowman are her husband; two sons, John H., Anaheim, Calif., and Joseph F., Salt Lake City; three daughters, Mrs. Allan M. (Dorothy) Acomb, Mrs. T. Quentin (Katherine) Cannon, and Mrs. Howel Q. (Ruth) Cannon, all of Salt Lake City, and 17 grandchildren. SURVIVING ARE 10 brothers, Joseph Fielding, E. Wesley, Willard R., Franklin R., Heber Chase, Fielding K. and Dr. Silas S., all of Salt Lake City; Dr. Calvin S. and Royall G., Murray, and Dr. Samuel S., Taylorsville, and nine sister, Mrs. Donnette S. Kesler, Mrs. Emily S. Walker, Mrs. Rachel S. Taylor, Mrs. Edith S. Patrick, Mrs. Marjorie S. Brown, Mrs. Asenath S. Conklin, Mrs. Emma S. Jensen, Mrs. Martha S. Jenson and Mrs. Agnes S. Knowlton, all of Salt Lake City. Funeral services for Mrs. Bowman will be conducted Wednesday noon at 260 E. South Temple, where friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday prior to services. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
