- (Leader of the Strathclyde Britons)
Tradition suggests that Dyfnwal was a strong and powerful ruler. The names Dumnagual and Dyfnwal are both Celtic versions of Domhnall (later Donald), which means 'ruler of the world'. His name also appears as a ruler of the Gododdin, or northern Votadini which suggests that he conquered that tribe later in his period of power. He is also credited with taking a census of his people in order to determine how to levy taxes. Since the early part of his reign must have been spent making territorial gains, it is assumed that the period of administrative reform came at the end of a comparatively long reign.
