"Mr. Joseph Hawley [Ephraim's grandfather] had surveyed to him by the proprietors of the township, some years later, two hundred and fifty-eight acres, as one division; one-third of which he gave to his grandson Benjamin, and two-thirds of it to his son Samuel, who gave it to his son Ephraim; all of it being located at White Plains, in Stratford them, but now in the town of Trumbull, Ct. This shows that Mr. Joseph Hawley purchased of Richard Mills one of the fourteen or fifteen original Rights of the township of Stratford."
"Joseph's son Samuel gave to his son Ephraim, in one plot at White Plains of land as good as there was in the town, 172 acres, which the father had given to Samuel; and therefore a moderate conjecture would place the estimate of Joseph Hawley's land between four and five thousand acres."

This Ephraim "No. 12" is the one that married "Sarah Welles of Wethersfield, Ct., and made his residence in Stratford," ] Ephraim "No. 12" is the Uncle of the Ephraim Hawley (1692-1771) who is the son of Samuel Hawley and Patience Nichols.

"Note 128.--Capt. Jehiel Hawley, No. 2660, son of Ephraim Hawley, was born in Stratford, Ct., in 1712, and died in Arlington, Vt., in 1777, aged 65 years. He settled with his father about 1732, in the southeastern part of New Milford, now Bridgewater, Ct., where he resided about thirty-two years, and then removed to Arlington, Vt. . ."
"In 1761, a petition was presented to the Connecticut Legislature for authority to raise money by lottery, for the purpose of clearing obstructions in Housatonic river and making it navigable, and Jehiel Hawley, with six others, was appointed a committee to sell the tickets, raise and appropriate the money to accomplish the object. After considerable money was raised and in the hands of William Tanner, of Cornwall, one of the committee, he became sick and died, and the money could not be found nor obtained from any property of his. This involved the whole committee, and report says Jehiel Hawley and his father [Ephraim Hawley], who had become security, lost much money by this undertaking."
"In 1764, Jehiel Hawley, his brother Josiah Hawley, and their father, Ephraim Hawley, then about 72 years of age, removed to Arlington, Vt., where they became leading land-holders of the township, three other men only having preceded them in 1763, in the commencement of the settlement of the town."
