Elizabeth gathered wool, washed, carded, and spun it into yarn, wove the yarn into cloth, and then she would make very fine men's suits, entirely by hand. | Elizabeth Lewis Hale Headstone Birth: Nov. 19, 1767 Litchfield Litchfield County Connecticut, USA Death: Feb. 16, 1842 Oakland Susquehanna County Pennsylvania, USA ----- Daughter of Nathaniel Lewis and Esther Tuttle of Wells, Vermont. The below bio text was created by Tim Troxell who initiated this memorial: "Elizabeth was born 19 November 1767 at Litchfield, Connecticut, a daughter of Nathaniel and Esther (Tuttle) Lewis. She married Issac Hale on 20 September 1790 at Wells, Vermont. One of their children, Emma Hale, married Joseph Smith Jr. Emma and Joseph's Infant son is buried near the Hale Family Plot." ----- Portions of the below text were excerpted from THE HISTORY OF SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY: When Elizabeth and Isaac married, her brother, Nathaniel Lewis, married about the same time to Sarah Cole. After their marriage, Isaac Hale and Nathaniel Lewis, with Elizabeth and Sarah, a yoke of steers and a cart with their goods, traveled over 220 miles from Wells, Rutland County, VT, to Willingborough, Luzerne County, PA. They were pioneer settlers here during the 1790's. In the early 1810's, the area was renamed Harmony, Susquehanna Co., PA. Isaac Hale and Nathaniel Lewis lived near each other for a time on the north side of the Susquehanna River. Upon settling in Willingborough/Harmony, the children of Isaac and Elizabeth were born: - Jesse Hale, 1792 - 1874) - David Hale, (1797 - 1878) - Alva Hale, (1795 - 1881) - Phebe Hale, (1798 - 1836) - Elizabeth Hale, (1800 -1874) - Isaac Ward Hale, (1802 - 1892) - Emma Hale, (1804 - 1879) - Tryael Hale, (1806 - 1860) - Reuben Hale, (1810 - ) And Siblings for Elizabeth were: Nathaniel Lewis & Esther Tuttle, parents: - Elizabeth Lewis, b. Nov. 20, 1767, Wells, VT, d. Feb. 16, 1842 - Nathaniel Lewis, b. May 27, 1768, d. Oct. 26, 1860 - John Lewis, b. Oct. 3, 1770 - Enos Lewis, b. May 16, 1772 - Esther Lewis, b. May 31, 1774 - Jekial Lewis, b. Aug. 20, 1776 - Molly Lewis, b. January 9, 1779 - Reuben Lewis, b. January 13, 1782 - Amos Lewis, b. April 7, 1785 The parents of Elizabeth were interred at Wells, Rutland County, Vermont rather than in Harmony, Susquehanna County, PA. Her parents did not relocate to Harmony, PA. ----- The Methodist Episcopal Church of Oakland previous to 1880 existed in the form of a class, that constituted at first part of the Harmony charge, and afterwards it was included in the Susquehanna church. In 1874 under the direction of Rev. A. J. Van Cleft, then pastor at Susquehanna, a church was built, in which services were held on Sunday afternoons. . . . In the Methodist Episcopal Church in Harmony . . . as early as 1812 a class was formed; yet before this time religious meetings were conducted at various private houses. All the names of the first class cannot be given with certainty, but it is known that Isaac Hale and his wife were members. ----- U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Application Name: Nathaniel Lewis Sr SAR Membership: 29751 Birth Date: 22 Oct 1740 Birth Place: Barnstable, Mass, Litchfield, CT Father: Gershom Lewis, M.D. Mother: Mary Maltby Spouse: Esther Tuttle Children: Nathaniel Lewis ----- Family links: Parents: Nathaniel Lewis (1740 - ____) Esther Tuttle Lewis (1747 - ____) Spouse: Isaac Hale (1763 - 1839)* Children: Alva Hale (1795 - 1881)* David Hale (1797 - 1878)* Phebe Hale Root (1798 - 1836)* Isaac W.
