| Caroline Grant Smith It looks like a Maudsley, does anyone know for sure if it is? Sudcliff Maudsley, who as a neighbor in Nauvoo, painted all of the Smith's, some of them many times. Maudsley loved to do profiles.
I notice she is wearing a gold bead necklace in this picture. Also, I notice that she is holding a large white handkerchief. Buddy told me at one time that that was a sign of mourning.
Maudley painted Emma with little Alexander Hale Smith and she is holding a large white handkerchief. It appears to be an after the martyrdom painting of Emma and Alexander.
There could be some hints as to when this was painted because of such things in the picture. Caroline was very ill but had times of being well enough to accompany William and the other brethren who went to New York and Boston, etc. She was with them in Boston on the 4th of July. They had not heard of the martyrdom as yet and had a wonderful day eating ice cream, walking on the Boston Commons and seeing a play. They went back to Philadelphia to the Smith's home. (Heber c. Kimball's diary, On the Potter's Wheel) Her illness was untreatable in those days other than the draining off of fluid. They would drain the fluid off of her (gallons) and she would have the ability to get around until it built back up in her system.. the condition she had was retention of fluid in the tissues of her body. They called it dropsy. It must have been a very painful condition. Emma took care of her in her last days.
Her sister, Roxanna Grant took care of Caroline and William's girls, and helped nurse Caroline at Emma's house. William persuaded Roxy to marry him and for a short time it looked like they would go west, but he didn't manage to hold onto any clear decisions and they went up to Lee County where he begin his church. Roxy bore him two children, a boy and a girl. They divorced. (both Caroline and Roxy were sisters of Jedediah Grant, father of Heber J. Grant. William later married Elsie Eliza Sanborn Brain, in Kirtland, and they moved to Turkey River, near Elkader, IA. They had three children: William Enoch, Edson Don Carlos, Louise Mae. Elsie Eliza is Gilda's great-great grandmother, Louise Mae her great grandmother, and Myrtle Clay Smith Bolsinger is Gilda's grandmother.
We visited the graves of Mary Jane Smith Scott, William and Roxy's daughter, and family. We also contacted a descendant of their other daughter, Caroline Louisa Smith Quince. Her husband built RR and they moved to Texas. We contacted some of her descendants there at one time.
