So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • Matthew McEwen was born October 11, between 1812 and 1814 Dunnamanagh, Tyrone County, Ireland, the son of William McEwen and Mary Craig. He had three Craig half brothers and two full brothers. His family moved to Scotland when he was about 6 years old. He was married to Mary Smith May 13, 1833 in Tollcross near Parkhead, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

In 1835, Matthew came to America, finding work in Philadelphia. As soon as he could save enough money, he sent for Mary and their two children. Sadly, Mary their oldest child died during the passage over the Atlantic Ocean.

Matthew joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in August 1841; where is uncertain. They were in Nauvoo, Illinois by January 1842. Matthew received a patriarchal blessing from Hyrum Smith in 1842, was ordained a 70 in 1844, and received his endowments in the Nauvoo Temple in 1846. The family soon removed to Winter Quarters where they remained for 4 1/2 years. In 1851, they crossed the plains in the John Fulmore Company. Ultimately they arrived in Fillmore, Utah in the spring of 1853. Matthew joined the United Order there in 1855. The family later moved to Beaver, Utah. Matthew was sealed to Sarah Jane Haden in the Endowment House in 1857, but she left Matthew soon after because of friction with Mary.

Matthew became ill and passed away December 12, 1875 in Beaver, Utah. He was the father of 12 children, 7 of which grew to maturity.
