Notes |
- William and Hannah Green are buried in an old cemetery beside the busy highway between Hatfield and Mena, Arkansas. "The old Antioch church, family church, is gone. They came quite a distance to church--on foot mostly and stayed all day just praying and listening to their preachers. It was their very life."
The Greens were a close-knit family. They stayed together whenever possible and located in the same neighborhoods. In Arkansas, they made up nearly a whole community. They often had family reunions, and these reunions would last several days. All of the children came and they camped out near someone's home place. It was like feeding an army.
They sang songs and listened to many sermons. Since several of the sons were preachers and the father was a preacher (and anyone who was inclined could preach) there was always enough preaching to last the 3 or 4 days of the reunion.
In 1838 Green drew land (Cherokee Nation land was drawn for after the Indians were relocated) 5 miles north of Canton, GA. He moved to Murray County in 1847, and stayed there until 1866 when he started to Texas.
