So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • BRIEF SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF LUCY MACK SMITH CARTER
Lucy Msck Smith Carter, daughter of Joseph F. and Alice Kimball Smith, was born in the old homestead at 333West 1st North, Salt Lake City, Utah near 1 P.M. April 14, 1890. She entered the first grade at the Union School on First North and Third West Street, where she continued to attend until she graduated from the Eighth Grade. She attended Sunday School and other ward functions at the 17th Ward located on First North between West Temple and First West Street.

After her graduation from the public school she entered the L.D.S. University where she graduated. Sometime later she and her sister Janetta took a course in obstetrics conducted by Dr. Margaret C. Roberts. She received a certificate of her successful completion of this work.

A year or so prior to her marriage she was appointed a member of the General Board of the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association. She served in this capacity for some time after her marriage and until her babies and family duties and the illness of her mother made it necessary for her to resign.

She was married to Ralph C. Carter in the Salt Lake Temple on the 18th day of March, 1915. Her father performed the ceremony. They immediately left for California on their honeymoon, visiting sthe Pan-American Exposition at San Francisco. Upon their return to Salt Lake they took up their residence at 808 East 4th South.
On the 21st of April, 1916 Helen Mar was born at the L.D.S. hospital and on the 1st of May 1918 Ralph amith was born, his birthplace being 808 East 4th South. Sometime in August the same year they all moved to 127 North 2d West Street, occupying the south side of her Mother's home. While living at that address Richard Fielding put in an appearance September 28,1919, followed by Lucy May on May 10, 1821, Jadon Mack on February 2, 1923 and little Margaret Jene on September 17, 1924 at the L.D.S. Hospital.
On the 6th of December, 1924 Ralph C. Carter left Salt Lake and went to Detroit, Michigan, believing that his business could be conducted in a large manufacturing center to better advantage. During March of 1926 Lucy made a trip to Detroit alone to see Ralph and determine whether she should return later with the children and take up their home. She returned home full of hope that her would do his part and in July of the same year she left for Detroit with her six children. She remained there until February 1927 when conditions were so desperate her Mother was obliged to send means to bring her and the children home. Her brother Heber Chase, who had business in the East, went to Detroit and assisted her in bringing the flock of little ones home. She remained with her mother until April, 1927 when herbrothers, with the help of her mother, bought her a home at 2528 Chadwick Avenue, Salt Lake City, where, on June 2, 1927, little Paul Smith was born.

Shortly after moving into the Hyland Park Ward she became active in the affairs of the ward. For sometimes she was teacher in the Mutual and she was a member of the Ward Choir. For four years prior ro her last illness ahe was teacher of the Gospel Doctrine class of the Ward Relief Society.

She suffered with ear trouble for some months until finally on July 25, 1933 she was operated on at the L.D.S. Hospital for mastoiditis of the right ear. Six days after that it was necessary to return her to the operating room where an appendectomy was performed and hernia conditions corrected.

She remained at the hospital until August 20 (Sunday). Because of her still weakened condition and the fact that her recovery was not as rapid as had been hoped for, she was removed to the home of her mother, the New Bates, Apartment 33,155 North Main Street, where, in spite of good nursing and the best of care and medical attention, she passed away November 24, 1933 at 4:50 p.m. Her mother and immediate family were at her bedside when she breathed her last.
