- BIOGRAPHY:
MY FATHER, SAMUEL SCHWARTZ SMITH by Joseph W. Smith
I would like to tell of some of the things that I remember of my father so that his posterity may know the choice man that he is and the kind of life that he has lived.
Dad lived on a farm all his married life, moving into the home at 2481 West 5400 South, Salt Lake City, Utah, when I was a baby.
Dad has become a little stooped, but normally he was 6 feet tall, has had a receding hair line most of his adult life. He has longer than normal arms, that made him a good boxer in his younger days, has big hands and feet. He has always been on the thin side although Mom was an excellent cook and fed him well.
When he and mom moved into their home, there was no water to the house. A few years later when water was available to connect onto, Dad got all the neighbors to dig a deep trench for the water line up to each home, then the next neighbor would continue to the next, etc. Then Dad and the boys laid the water line for 1 mile themselves. That brought the water up 5400 South from Redwood Road.
Always before getting ready to teach school at the University of Utah, Dad would have to get the chores done, milking the cows, etc. He would eat a big bowl of cooked cereal, then drive 12 miles to the university where he was a professor of mathematics. He taught at the school for 40 years when he was forced to retire because of a heart attack at the age of 69 years. He always, free of charge, picked up anyone that attended the university that lived close around. His door at the school was always opened to any student that needed help. For about 14 years, because it was limited to the summer months that he attended the graduate school in Chicago, Illinois, he worked to get his Doctorate in Mathematics and in 1940 achieved that honor. Mom went back to Chicago with Dad to receive his degree. When Dad was away at school, whenever he would write home, he would enclose in the letter a couple sticks of blackjack gum to be divided among the children.
Although Dad was a doctor of his profession, he never thought of himself as better than others. He is loved by all who know him. Dad has always been a faithful member of the church and would always do any church assignment before his own farming.
He has a great compassion for people. All his brothers but one have died and he keeps in constant contact with each of their widows, helping out in any way that he can. He visits the sick and they feel of the love and sympathy he has for them. He has spoken at many funerals of friends and acquaintances. When Beth’s father died, Dad held his hand for a couple of hours until he passed away.
He has truly lived the law of caring for the widows. Every Christmas time for years he has killed a pig and with the help of the boys has cut it up and delivered it to all the widows that he knew. He has helped many people materially and spiritually.
He has given 1,450 Patriarchal Blessings since he was made Patriarch. The hours of service he has given to people cannot be counted. He never expects to be paid for the service he renders to people.
He has tried to be fair with his children and has helped them each in every way that he could.
He has been a good example to his children and grandchildren. Joseph’s two boys worked with Dad for many summers on the farm and he taught them many things well.
