So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

Information on this family and descendants in America comes mainly from "The Mauk Family Tree - History and Summary" compiled and edited by George Thomas Mauk while residing in Tampico, Mexico (not dated, but I estimate George wrote this in the 1950's). Ron Moore sent a copy of George T. Mauk's manuscript to me in Oct. 1993 - I don't know where he got it. George T. Mauk's information differs somewhat from that contained in the "Lauffen Chart" I transcribed. This is a direct quote of George T. Mauk's introductory paragraphs: "The Mauk family originated in Wurttemberg, Germany. Our history starts with John Mauk, who was born at Lauffin. A/N , Wurttemberg, in the south western part of Germany, near the French border. He was a cibinet maker and undertaker by trade, and continued the business until his death in 1796. His son, Gottlieb, was associated with him at the later's death, and continued the business. Like all German families, his sons Jacob and Thomas H. , also worked with their father. After his death in 1845, they carried on the business until they came to the United States. Gottlieb Mauk, son of John Mauk, has an interesting history. In the Dixon-Hanson Company's Library, Vol. IV, 1910 Edition, we quote the following: ' On May 12, 1812, Napoleon declared war against Russia, and soon invaded the country with his army of 600,000 soldiers; entered Moscow, after defeating them at Bordinia, Russia; conquered all that was to be conquered and the Army started its return march to Germany and France. Due to the extreme winter, shortage of food, supplies and clothing, the soldiers died by the thousands, only 25,000 oldiers returned to Germany and France out of the 600,000 men.' According to Jacob, eldest son of Gottlieb Mauk who was also born in Lauffin, Napolean told the Emperor of Wurttemberg, those that are not with me are against me. Wurttemberg, being a small country and close to the French border, had to obey. They mobilized a small Army to ally with the French, and marched against Russia. According to him only two soldiers returned to this part of the country, his father Gottlieb Mauk was one of the two. He later received the Iron Cross for his Bravery. This Iron Cross is now in the possession of Mildred Mauk Crawford, daughter of Charles H. Mauk, son of Thomas H. Mauk. Gottlieb Mauk died in 1845 in Germany." "Mary Mauk, widow of Gottlieb Mauk, made her home with Thomas H Mauk her son until her death in the fall of 1883. She is buried in the Mauk Family plot in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, PA. She never learned to speak the English language. Thomas H. Mauk disliked the German language so much that he concentrated on the english, and he practically eliminated his German accent." He married Gottliebin (Mary?) MEZLER, 30 Apr 1826 in Lauffen. Died 6 Jun 1865. They had the following children: 94 i. Gottlieben MAUK 95 ii. Dorothea C. MAUK 96 iii. Thomas H. MAUK 97 iv. Jacob Friedrich MAUK 67. Christian Freidrich MAUK. Mauk, as reprinted in Mock Family Historian, Winter 1995 issue: "Dorothea C. is the widow of Christian Metzgar and resides in Philadelphia." She married Christian Metzgar. 96. Thomas H. MAUK. Son of Gottlieb Friedrich MAUK & Gottliebin (Mary?) MEZLER. Born 22 Dec 1833 in Lauffen. Occupation Furniture maker and undertaker. Immigration 1852 USA. Religion Bethel Church. Continued from George T. Mauk's manuscript, "During the years from 1840 to 1850, many Germans emigrated to the US. During that period, Jacob and Thomas H. Mauk, together with their Mother and two Sisters, Caroline and Gottlieben, came to the states and settled at Frogtown, Cumberland, Pennsylvania (which is 8 miles west of Harrisburg, PA.). They opened a furniture and undertaking business together. Gottlieben became homesick, and returned to Germany, and was never heard from again. Caroline went to Philadelphia, where she met John Metzler, and they later married and operated a Hotel there for many years." "When Jacob and Thomas H. Mauk dissolved their partnership at Frogtown, PA, Thomas continued the business for a number of years. His sons John, Thomas and Charles were born there. After the Civil War, he moved his family to Mechanberg, PA., 3 miles west of Frogtown, where he opened a furniture and undertaking business, which he continued until he retired in 1896. During the war between the North and South, Thomas H. Mauk worked for the U.S. War Dept. as a cabinet maker in Washington D.C. and Norfolk, VA. Mildred Mauk Crawford has pass given by the Navy Dept while he was working at Fort Monroe, VA. About 1880 his son Thomas M. Mauk entered into a partnership with his father, as Mauk & Son. About the same time his son John Mauk opened a similar business at York Springs, with Charles Mauk going there to work for him. It was there that they met their prospective brides, John Mauk marrying Linda Myers and Charles H. Mauk marrying Emma Detrick. In the fall of 1881, Thomas M Mauk went to New York City where Charles J Reynard, who had just come from Paris, France, and was teaching the art of embalming. Thomas attended the school and upon graduatiion he returned to his home. A few days later a prominent person in Mechanberg died and Thomas told the deceased's father that he would embalm the body. The father objected, but Thomas was allowed to embalm the body anyway. The father went ot Philadelphia, rather than attend his son's funeral; but when he returned and ascertained that his son had looked good at the funeral, Thomas was thereafter allowed to continue the new practice of embalming. It is said he was the first embalmer west of the Susquehanna River at that time. In the fall of 1888 the partnership was dissolved, and Thomas M moved to Carlisle, PA, where he opened a furniture and undertaking business, alone, until about 1894, when his son Samuel entered the business until about 1896. The business closed then, and Samuel moved the equipment to Steelton, PA. After 18 months, Samuel contracted meningitis and died within three days on May 14, 1898 at age 21. In shock, his father Thomas M Mauk died six weeks later on 24 Jun 1898. Mary E. Mauk his first wife died 1 Jan 1895, and his second wife Sarah Conway survived him." From "1886 History of Cumberland Co. PA" biographical sketch of Thomas H. Mauk, as reprinted in Mock Family Historian, Winter 1995 issue: "Thomas H. was but seven years ols when his father died. He attended the common schools until fourteen. He then learned the cabinet and undertaking trade until he was seventeen at Lauffen and then went to Stuttgart and worked until 1852, when he came with his brother Jacob to america, landing in New York after a voyage of eight weeks. Later he came to Philadelphia where he worked at his trade for two years, then to Churchtown for eight months, after which he came to Mechanicsburg and worked for Samuel Worst, cabinet maker and undertaker, for three years. He then went to Shiremanstown and opened a shop of his own, and while there married Miss Elizabeth Houmburg 3 May 1856. She was born in Hessen-Cassel, dau. of Beltzer and Charlotte (Holts) Houmburg. In 1859 Mr. Mauk came to Mechanicsburg and worked for Samuel Worst until 1865 and in 1866 formed a partnership with William S. Diehl in the furniture and undertaking business. In 1882 Mr. Mauk sold his interest in furniture but retained the undertaking business, which he has since continued. He has the leading establishment of the kind in this part of the country. He and his wife are members of the Bethel Church. They have had 10 children, viz: John J. married Miss Malinda Myers, and is engaged in the undertaking, cabinet and furniture business at Mechanicsburg, OH.; Thomas M. married Miss Louisa Wlaker of Bendersville, Adams Co., and is engaged in the cabinet and furniture business at Mechanicsburg PA.; Charles H. is engaged in the undertaking and cabinet business at York Springs, Adams. Co. PA; Kate S. resides with her parents, as do Mary E., Edward G., Samuel T. and Elizabeth C." He married Elizabeth HOUMBURG, daughter of Beltzer HOUMBURG & Charlotte Holts, 3 May 1856 in Shiremanstown, PA. Born in Hessen-Cassel, Germany. They had the following children: 140 i. John J. Samuel T. MAUK 149 x. Elizabeth C. MAUK 97. Jacob Friedrich MAUK. Son of Gottlieb Friedrich MAUK & Gottliebin (Mary?) MEZLER. Born 12 Aug 1836 in Lauffen. Immigration 1852 USA. From George T. Mauk's manuscript: "Jacob Mauk met his wife, Katherine Shireman, in Shiremanstown, a hamlet then two miles away. The latter town was founded by members of her family, hence its name. The members of the Shireman Family are all burined in the old graveyard at St. John's Church, 2 miles from Shiremanstown. The curch was built in the late 1700's and has an interesting history., and it is used once a year for religious services. Thomas H. Mauk also met his wife, Elizabeth Mary Humberg in Shiremanstown. Her Mother operated a bakery there and she is buried in small graveyard west of the town. Jacob Mauk and his wife remained in Frogstown for a number of years, William, Daniel, and Frank being born there. The partnership with Thomas was later dissolved and Jacob took his family and moved to state of Illinois, where he opened a similar business. His son being energetic and ambitious, talked to some immigrants of caravans that were headed West and he decided to go with them. He went to the Dakotas, where he worked as a cowboy for several years. He then heard of the government giving land grants to anyone homesteading in Nebraska. He went to Omaha and obtained a section of land near Broken Bow, Nebr. in 1882. He then wrote to his father, Jacob, who also came on West with his Family. He and his tow sons took up land grants near Broken Bow. It was then still a rough country with the Indians roving over the countryside. They continued there for many years and became very prosperous. Jacob Mauk and members of his family often talked about the early days when Indians were still roving over the western plains. There were no building materials in Nebraska and the early settlers built what is known as SOD houses, in which they lived for years. The nearest railroad station was at Kearney, Nebr. 90 miles to the south on the Union Pacific. The farmers would go together in the spring and fall, and drive to Kearney to get supplies and whatever they needed, leaving their women and children at home, not knowing if the Indians would raid their places before they returned. Jacob Mauk and his sons William, Daniel, and Frank had their land close to each other. His Daughter Katie Verbina Mauk, who was married to Carlton Burdick, also had a farm nearby."
