  Middle name of Witt is undocumented--see explanation under his name. William Clifford Barney, head of the Barney Family Historical Association, gives his name as simply "John Barney" in page 17 of his aforementioned documented book. "Shown on some submissions--source of Witt as middle name appears to be undocumented," 3 August 2014 by Michael Reiche. JOHN BARNEY John, eldest son of Jacob and Ann Witt Barney, was born 1 June 1665, in Salem, Mass., and died in May 1728, in Taunton, Mass. He lived in Bristol, R. I., in Swansea and Rehoboth, Mass., and removed to Taunton in 1710. There he bought the house and land of John Rogers, formerly the residence of Robert Thornton, one of the first purchases of Taunton. Little is found in the records concerning him, but it is known that he was at one time a deputy sheriff. He married 4 Nov., 1686, Mary, daughter of Deacon Wm. Throope, of Bristol, R. I. The following children are enumerated in his will, dated May 25, 1728: 1. Sarah, b. 28 Oct. 1705, at Bristol. Married James Williams 2. Mary, married William Carpenter 3. John, died in infancy 4. Researched by Franklin Russ Barney Edward Barney was father to Jacob Barney, born about 1601. Jacob came to Salem, Massachusetts from Bredham, Buckinghamshire, England. He was a tailor. He was opposed to the sentence of the General Court against those who petitioned for freer franchise. This shows that he had more liberal religious views than most of his contemporaries. Jacob Barney's name often appears in the early records of Salem as an appraiser of estates. A well known writer says of Jacob Barney, "An intelligent merchant, often selectmen, deputy to the General Court." He died at Salem, Massachusetts 28 April 1673. His son, Jacob Barney, eldest and only son surviving childhood was a Baptist minister and founded churches in Charlestown and Swansea, Massachusetts, and is probably the one who in 1668, was one of the founders of the First Baptist Society of Boston. He lived in Salem and Rehoboth, Massachusetts and in Bristol, Rhode Island. He married Ann Witt. John [sometimes middle name seen as “Witt”—not verified] Barney, son of Jacob, was born 1665, Salem, Massachusetts And married Mary Throop, daughter of Deacon. William Throop of Bristol, Rhode Island, 4 November 1686. He lived in Bristol, Rhode Island, Swansea and Rehoboth, and Taunton, Massachusetts. He was at one time a Deputy Sheriff.
