  OBIT: Benjamin Franklin Donoho, 82, was born on the 20th of January 1939 in Kansas City, Kansas, and passed away peacefully on March 18, 2021 at his home in Highland, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents: Barzillai Franklin Donoho and Okle May Ricketts Donoho and his siblings: Wilma Louise Donoho Saunders and Gerald Ivan Donoho. When asked who he first wanted to see when he got to the other side of the veil, Ben quickly responded, “My mother, Aunt Garnet and Louise (his sister).” Aunt Garnet was his primary caregiver after the death of his mother when he was 3. Ben attended the University of Kansas City before joining the Air Force in 1957 where he was trained to become a radio technician. It was at Scott AFB in Illinois that he met the first member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, more commonly known at that time as Mormons. Ben thought Mormons were like Mennonites and he asked lots of questions and got lots of answers. He soon joined the Church. Two months later, his new military assignment was in Morocco where he was stationed on a mountain top at the Sidi Slimane Air Base. In 1975, Ben setup and managed the first Community School for all age groups at East High School in Salt Lake City. Ben graduated from Brigham Young University in 1972 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management and accounting, and a Masters Degree in 1977 in Community Education Administration. In 1976 he worked at BYU as the International Student Advisor, where he served foreign students from 70 countries. He then went on to work at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Headquarters in Salt Lake City in administrative capacities. While attending BYU, he eventually met, then married Mary Ethel McConkie in the Salt Lake Temple on June 3, 1971. Mary’s father, Bruce R. McConkie, was the sealer joining them together for time and eternity. Ben faithfully served in many ward and stake assignments, and on the Young Men’s General Board. He also served as a Family History Consultant in both the Fruit Heights and Highland Stakes Family History Libraries and as a Temple Worker in the Bountiful, Utah Temple. Ben’s interests were many. He never met a seed he did not want to plant, nor a gardening book he did not want to buy. This was rivaled only by the number of file boxes filled with sheet music he collected over the years. He loved new technology especially computers and programming them. In 2005 Ben talked his daughter Mariana into getting her HAM Radio license with him. The fun spread to others in the family and he enjoyed visiting with them and others from all over and soon joined other local Hams weekly. Ben loved discovering his roots and sharing family stories with his children, taking one or more of them back to visit the Donoho’s in Kansas and Missouri, while Mary cared for the others at home. He was often the first to suggest going to visit Mary’s elderly Aunts and Uncles where he gave service in whatever way they needed. He was invited to join with other in-law family relatives, descendants of Joseph Smith Sr., to learn how to do descendancy research and then find descendants of Joseph Smith Jr. With his wife he served on the Joseph Smith Sr/Lucy Mack Smith Foundation Committee, which later evolved into the Joseph Smith Sr. Family Association. In their nearly 50 years of marriage he cheerfully supported every McConkie Family Home Evening, and McConkie Reunion, as well as the Joseph Smith Sr., Joseph F. Smith, and Joseph Fielding Smith Family reunions. He was frequently the first to arrive and the last to leave. He could initiate a conversation with anybody, anywhere. Ben was born with music in his soul, and played the piano “by ear” often entertaining his young children by playing the piano so they could dance. If he didn’t know the songs they wanted him to play, they would sing it and then he would play it. He had an exceptionally beautiful bass voice and was often asked to sing solo’s or duets in church settings. In 1996 Ben went on tour with the “Dan Carter Singers” and sang with the group recording a CD titled, "Come unto Him — Music by Dan Carter." He is survived by his wife, Mary McConkie Donoho, and his children: Rachel Anne, Rebecca Louise Egan (Josh), Mariana Allan (Tyler), Bethany Lynn Crowton (Nate), Sarah Chloe Gudmunson (Preston), David Benjamin (Krista Leigh Jensen), Robert Bruce Donoho and 21 grandchildren. The funeral will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 5853 W 10400 N, Highland, Utah at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2021. The graveside service and interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery located at 200 N St E Salt Lake City, Utah 84103 at 12 PM MT. Due to Covid19 concerns, there is a limit of 99 who may attend the funeral in person. In order to accommodate additional family and friends, the service will also be broadcast. The link for the broadcast will be posted here on Thursday March 25th. There will not be a public viewing or a luncheon following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate contributions to Humanitarian Aid of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or a charity of your choice.
