| Notes |
- Joseph Crocker, s. of Dea. William Crocker and his 1st wife Alice, b. in 1654 per the Barnstable, Mass. Town Records [BarnTR 1:401]. He died prior to Mar. 7, 1727/8 when his widow and six of his seven children, plus his four son-in-laws, filed a distribution agreement of his estate with the Barnstable County, Mass. Probate Court [BarnPR 4:402]. The agreement was separately attested by the same heirs on Mar. 28th and 29th, 1728. No other probate documents or inventory of his estate can be found of record.
Otis [Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families (1860, 1:218)] errs in stating "In his will dated 20th Feb. 1720-1, he gives to his wife Temperance all of his personal estate..." There is no such will of record with Otis repeating the provisions of the above cited March 1728 distribution agreement as if they were the same provisions contained in a purported will. If there was a will with specific provisions to the heirs, a subsequent distribution agreement would not have been necessary.
Joseph's death is not recorded in the Barnstable Town Records. In G.A. Hinckley's copy of the pre-1900s reading of West Barnstable Cemetery gravestones [Records of the Town of Barnstable, Mass., NEHGS CD (2002)] is the gravestone inscription: "Here lyes ye body of Joseph Crocker who decd Febry ye 23d 1728-9 in ye 28th year of his age." A debate has ensued regarding whether this inscription and the gravestone photo attached to this memorial is that of Joseph Crocker born in 1654. On its face the recorded inscription does not match the known records concerning Joseph Crocker born in 1654, and a search of the extant Barnstable Town and West Barnstable Church records yields no Joseph Crocker born circa 1701-2 who died in Feb. 1728-9 at the chronological age of 27 (i.e., Ætatis 28). On one hand the debate has suggested that the transcribed year should be 1727-8 and Joseph's Ætatis age at death of 72 or 73 was originally transposed or otherwise incorrectly transcribed as 28. On the other hand the now crumbling and nearly illegible gravestone may not be that of Joseph Crocker born in 1654.
In the Barnstable town records Joseph is called "Joseph ser." whereas his nephew Joseph (John2 William1), b. Mar. 1, 1667/8, is initially called Joseph, Jr. and later as Lieut. then finally as Capt. Joseph Crocker. Capt. Joseph m. Ann Howland at Barnstable Sept. 18, 1691 and d. of record at Barnstable in 1742. Neither Joseph Crocker, Sr. nor Capt. Joseph Crocker, Jr. had a recorded son Joseph, and neither of the latter two Joseph's had a son who had a recorded son Joseph. The next oldest Joseph Crocker of record was Rev. Joseph Crocker b. at Barnstable circa 1714 (Thomas3, Josiah2, William1).
Joseph Crocker, Sr. was at least living Oct. 27, 1716 when he is named as Joseph Crocker, Sr., along with his elder brother John Crocker Sr. and the latter's son Capt. Joseph Crocker, in the Barnstable records as mutual members of a committee to insure "peas & quittnes" in the town [BarnTR 2:7].
In "ye beginning of December 1677" Joseph Crocker "ye son of William Crocker" [BarnTR 1:403] m. Temperance Bursley, dau. of John Bursley and Joanna Hull, b. circa 1656 at Barnstable. She d. Mar. 29, 1741, Æ 85, indicating she was b. on or after Mar. 30, 1656. Her readable gravestone is extant at the West Barnstable Cemetery. They had the following seven known children b. of record at Barnstable:
• i. William Crocker, b. Aug. 25, 1679, d. Mar. 5, 1740/1 at Barnstable; m. in Nov. 1705 at Barnstable (by Stephen Skiffe, Esq.), his 1st cousin Mary Crocker, dau. of Josiah Crocker and Melatiah Hinckley, b. Sept. 14, 1677 at Barnstable, the maternal granddau. of Thomas Hinckley, the last Gov. of the Plymouth Colony before Plymouth was absorbed as part of the Province of Massachusetts. Eight known children of the family.
• ii. Ens. Timothy Crocker, b. Apr. 30, 1681, d. Jan. 31, 1737/8 at Barnstable; m. Oct. 27, 1709 at Barnstable, his 1st cousin Meletiah Crocker, the sister of his brother William's wife, b. Nov. 20, 1681 at Barnstable where she d. Dec. 31, 1737. Five known children of the family.
• iii. Noah Crocker, b. Dec. 8, 1683; he is likely the Noah Crocker "of Barnstable" who d. of record June 16, 1716 at Boston, Mass. As he was the only sibling not included directly or indirectly in the 1728 distribution agreement of his father's estate, he apparently left no descendants.
• iv. Joanna Crocker, b. July 18, 1687, d. Apr. 13, 1766 at Barnstable; m. Feb. 9, 1708/9 at Barnstable, Joseph Fuller, s. of Capt. Thomas Fuller and Elizabeth Lothrop, b. July 12, 1683 at Barnstable where he d. Sept. 4, 1745. Seven known children of the family. All of the descendants of this family are descendants of Mayflower passenger Edward Fuller.
• v. Martha Crocker, b. Feb. 22, 1689/90; m. June 30, 1709 at Barnstable, Benjamin Phinney, s. of John Phinney and Mary Rogers, b. June 18, 1682 at Barnstable. Six known children of the family, who through their paternal grandmother are descendants of Mayflower passengers Thomas Rogers and his son Joseph.
• vi. Temperance Crocker, b. Aug. 26, 1694; m. Thomas Hinckley, s. of Samuel Hinckley, Jr. and Mary Fitzrandolph, b. Jan. 1, 1688/9 at Barnstable. Six known children of the family. Thomas Hinckley's maternal grandparents, Edward Fitzrandolph and Elizabeth Blossom, are the maternal ancestors of U.S. Pres. Barack Obama.
• vii. Remember Crocker, b. Aug. 26, 1699; m. 1) May 28, 1719 at Barnstable, Samuel Annable, s. of John Annable and Experience Taylor, b. Sept. 3, 1693. He purportedly d. in 1748 in Conn. Eight children of record at Barnstable. Remember m. 2) as his 2nd wife by an intention filed Dec. 12, 1755 at Barnstable, Jonathan Nye, Jr. of Sandwich, Mass., s. of Jonathan Nye and Patience Burgess, b. in Nov. 1691 at Sandwich. Where they respectively died has not been traced.
