    • "Edward Stradling came of age in the dying years of the fifteenth century and entered the next one married to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Arundell of Lanherne in Cornwall. ... Sir Edward breathed his last at St. Donat's on 8 May 1535, his wife having died in childbirth twenty-two years earlier at the Stradling manor of Merthyr Mawr. On the first anniversary of Sir Edward's death, his son Thomas brought her bones from Merthyr Mawr and reunited them with her husband's in the chancel of St Donat's church."

      In his youth Edward was initially committed to the custody of Sir James Tyrell, steward of Glamorgan, but after 1485 he finished his minority in the care of his step-father Sir Rhys ap Thomas, K.G. He was knighted 'under the banner of Henry VIII' at Tournai Cathedral on September 25, 1513. In addition to his chief residence at Saint Donat's, he was lord of Monke Ashe, Merthyr Mawr, Llanffa, and East Orchard, and died testate with a will proved on February 9, 1535/36 [P.C.C. 32 Hogen]. His support of Welsh culture included his patronage of the Glamorgan Cywyddwyr, including Iorwerth Fynglwyd and Lewys Morgannwg.

      Here lyeth Edward Stradlinge, Knight, the 4 of that name, sonne to Thomas Stradlinge, Esquier, and Jenet his wyfe (the daughter of Thomas Mathewe of Rader, in the county of Glamorgan, Esquier) who died in the Castell of Saint Donatts the 8 day of May in the yere of our Lord 1535, and was buried in the chauncel of the church there, whose bones were after translated by his nephewe Edward Stradlinge, Knight, the 5 of that name into the chappell there in the yere of our Lord 1573. Allso here lyeth Elizabeth his wife, daughter to Thomas Arundell of Lanheyron in the county of Cornewall, Knight, who dyed in childbead at Merthermawre the 20 day of February in the yere of our Lord 1513 and was buried there whose bones Thomas Stradlinge, Knight, her sonne, caused to be taken up and caryed to Saint Donatts and buryed in the chauncell of the church therewith her husband the 8 day of Maye in the yere of our Lord 1536, and were afterwards by Edward Stradlinge, Knight, the 5 of that name, her nephewe, translated out of the chauncell into the chappell there in the yere of our Lord 1573.
