  Owen Porter slipped from this earthly realm Saturday, 9 April 2016 surrounded by his children. He was born in Escalante, Utah on 12 December 1921 to Hyrum Adelbert and Dicy Woolsey Porter. He grew up herding sheep down on the Escalante Desert and up on Boulder Mountain for his Uncle. He loved fishing and hunting and would go back to Escalante as often as he could. He loved the area there. He married Leola Green in Gallup, New Mexico on 23 September 1946 and later had their marriage solemnized in the Arizona Temple 18 October 1948. They later moved to Provo, Utah so he could attend Brigham Young University where he received his teaching degree and eventually his Masters Degree. They moved to Lehi where he taught History and English in the old Lehi Junior High School for 30 years. Owen made a difference in so many of his student’s lives. I don’t think he ever fully comprehended that. He served in the Navy during WWII but never said too much about it, except that he joined the Navy because he figured he would always have a dry bed, unless the ship sank. He served aboard the USS Griffin in the South Pacific. He was a faithful member of the LDS church and served in many callings, one of which was serving as the Branch President in Bedford, Virginia on his mission with his wife, Leola. Owen was often mistaken for President Thomas S. Monson and his daughter, Peggy, would jokingly tell him he could be President Monson’s stunt double. He is survived by his children: Peggy (Jeff) Morrill, Neva (Brent) Wilson and Shawn (Holly) Porter and sister Phyllis (Ed) Jarrett , 6 grandchildren; Zachary, Cally, Tyler, Halee, Joshua and Riley; 13 great grandchildren; Zachary, Keltic, Treyven, Tyler Gage, Malcom, Koven, Lucas, Kelby, Ali, Jesicca, Sylar, Frankee and Alexia plus a large extended family. He is preceded in death by his wife Leola; parents Hyrum and Dicy Porter; brothers Vernon Porter, Jack Porter, Orland Porter, Robert Barker and sisters Glenna Banks and Vera Young and their spouses. Also preceded by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Hershel and Mildred Crotts whom he loved hanging out with. A special thanks is extended to all who cared for Dad these last few months and years. Neva and Brent tireless took care of dad in his home, for which her siblings will be forever grateful for. Thank you to Spencer, Mikala, Collette and all others from 1st Choice and to Trevor from Senior Care, for their loving support and understanding with dad. Also, to all the members in the Manila 5th Ward for their kindness. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, 16 April 2016 at 12:00 PM at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, 500 N. Main, Pleasant Grove, Utah. A viewing will be held Friday from 6-8 PM at Wing Mortuary, 118 E. Main, Lehi, Utah and on Saturday morning at Wing Mortuary from 10-11 AM prior to the graveside service.
