- Obit: Arlene M. Jackson | Professor, 68 Arlene M. Jackson, 68 (daughter of deceased Charles and Frances Jackson), formerly of Narberth, PA, retired professor of English literature at St. Joseph's University, died Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Haverford after a 25-year struggle with multiple sclerosis. Ms. Jackson joined the St. Joseph's faculty in 1973. She had previously taught at Wayne State University, Detroit; Oakland University, Rochester, MI; and the University of Detroit. She was the author of a book on the English writer, Thomas Hardy, and contributed to numerous professional journals. She often wrote about the Victorians' interest in the new invention of photography. According to her sister, Lois Jackson, IHM, of Silver Spring, MD, she was a talented photographer and took perceptive photos in London and the English countryside during her many visits there. In 1981 she spent a year in London on a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship. A native of Detroit, Ms. Jackson earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College in Detroit; a master's degree in literature from Villanova University; and a doctorate in English language and literature from the University of Michigan. She received an Outstanding Graduate award from Villanova University in 1986, among other honors over the years for her scholarship and teaching. She retired from St. Joseph's in 1995 when she became disabled. She wrote articles about her experience with multiple sclerosis, researched medical information about the disease, and counseled other patients. In addition to her sister, Ms. Jackson is survived by another sister, Mary McGovern, of Trinity, FL, and two nieces, Laurie Hale of Minnesota and Andrea Forsmans of Florida and their children. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Margaret Church, Narberth. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA
