John Brockett, the first person of that name to come to America was born in England in 1609. He came to America probably in ship Hector in 1637. The passengers were “gentlemen of wealth and character.” In 1638 John Brockett helped lay the foundations of New Haven, Connecticut. He was a Civil Engineer and Surveyor, and in June 1639 laid out the large square in the center of the city of New Haven.
Tradition has existed for 200 years in New Haven that John Brockett was the eldest son of Sir John Brockett of Brockett Hall, Hertfordshire, England.
On Account of his Puritanical ideas, his father (who had been knighted by Queen Elizabeth) disinherited him, and John then gave up all claims to the titles and estates of the Brocketts in England, and came with Rev. John Davenport to America. One source said that Sir John Brockett also had his son, John; name removed from all the family records so that it should never appear in any published lists of the family.
There is no record of John Brockett’s marriage, but it is generally supposed that he was married in England, having gone back there. His first son, John, was born in England in 1642. His wife followed him to America in 1644. The finished Archive sheet states she was a Miss Prudden. Their daughter, Abigail Brockett, born in 1650 married John Payne. (In searching the vital records of Gravely, Hertfordshire, England, the Payne name was noted. Archive sheet gives William as father of John Payne, with no birthplace in England given.)
In the back of the Rockwell Genealogy by Edward J. Rockwell, is a beautiful pedigree chart of the Rockwells. The early ones were in Yorkshire, and they eventually owned land in Hertfordshire. Recommend research in Hertfordshire, especially Wheat Hampstead where Sire John Brockett is buried. On his tomb is stated he had ten sons and five daughters.
With the new GIANT system of the Church, names on the pedigree in the Rockwell Genealogy should be checked and many names could be submitted.
