  Richard Beach and Catherine Cook were Puritans from England who traveled to America to escape religious persecution and to worship in a land of religious freedom. They were married in 1641, in the newly established settlement of New Haven. Richard Beach was among the names of persons who accompanied John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton to Connecticut (via Boston). He immigrated to America in 1637 to the Boston Harbor. Historical records indicate that during this time period, only British ships were able to sail from England to the Boston harbor when traveling to America. "This period from 1620-1640, is known in American history as the Great Puritan Migration. The first settlers of New Haven were mostly Puritan businessmen and their families who traveled with a prominent and wealthy Puritan minister named John Davenport. When his congregation arrived in Boston they were disappointed with what they found there. Therefore, when Rev Davenport learned of an area located near the Quinnipiac River that seemed ideal for trade between Boston and the Dutch city of New Amsterdam, his group of followers sailed with him to New Haven Harbor in 1638. Richard was on the ship that docked in New Haven and was among the first settlers in New Haven. He was one of the "Signers of the New Haven Compact" This couple had 4 known children in New Haven: the 1st child, a daughter Mary born 6 June 1646; the 2nd child, a son Benjamin, born 3 October 1644; the 3rd child, a son Azariah, born 6 July 1646; and the 4th child, a daughter Mercy, born 6 July 1646. In 1755, Richard enlisted in the fourth regiment under Colonel Andrew Ward in the seventh Connecticut Company under Captain David Lacey in the French & Indian War. The Beach family likely lived on a prosperous farm and had a successful business shipping their goods and provisions to other settlements throughout New England. Richard and Catherine lived the rest of their lives in New Haven.
