- Anthony Colby was born in England, possibly at Beccles, Suffolk or Banham, Norfolk in 1595 and he died at Salisbury, Massachusetts 11 February 1660/1. He married Susannah Haddon, who died at Salibury 8 July 1689. Anthony appeared in the Boston area on or before 8 September 1633 for on that day his son John was baptized and on 14 May 1634 he admitted as a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He settled next in Cambridge where he owned two houses and six acres of land on Brattle Street. Between 1634 and 1639 he lived in Ipswich. Later he was a planter in Amesbury and Salisbury.
The records of the First Church in Boston indicate that he was dismissed from the congregation and his membership sent to Salibury. “Our brother, Anthony Colby according to his desires had letters of demission granted unto him with the consent of the church by their silence unto the church at Salibury.”
On 29 October 1658 Mr. Colby’s name heads a list as having been granted 60 acres of land in Amesbury. His son John was granted thirty acres at the same time. Anthony Colby’s will was inventoried in 1662/3 and soon his property was divided among his wife and children.
