Notes - David served as a soldier in the war of 1812 He came to Illinois before 1843. Alva and David owned adjoining farms in Near Amboy The 1st school-house in Amboy township was built of logs in the years 1839, and situated on the Sublette road, just south of the railroad crossing. Men were employed in winter and women in summer. Ira Hale, David Hale taught at this house. It was called the Wasson school-house. He lived in Amboy, Illinois with his sister who had married Benjamin Wasson. In 1881 he was a farmer near Amboy. He was in the War of 1812. He died on 16 Apr 1878 at the age of 81 years 1 month and 9 days. He lived in the Temperance Hill Settlement. His obituary was in the Amboy newspaper of 24 April 1887. He and his wife had 2 sons and 3 daughters. He and his wife are buried in Prairie Repose in Amboy, Illinois in Section 1. The census of 13 Sept 1850 lists David and his family in Amboy township, Lee County, Illinois David age 56 born Pa.; Rhoda age 45 Born 45; Ira age 26 born Pa.; David age 22 born Pa.; Priscilla age 20 born Pa.; Betsey age 18 born Pa.; and Rhoda Jane age 8 born Ohio. On the 6th of July 1860 they are located in the Town of Amboy: He is listed as Jessee Hale age 66 born Pennsylvania, farmer; Rhoda age 56 born New York; Rhoda J. age 18 born Ohio On the 22 July 1870 census the family is located in the township of Amboy, Lee county, Illinois. David Hale, born March 6th, 1794, in Susquehanna Co. Penn., died on his farm near Amboy, Apr. 16th 1878. His funeral was largely attended last Wed, from the M. E. church, Rev. Battis officiating. In 1790 his father move from Vermont to Penn. In '37 deceased moved to Cataraugus Co., N. Y. thence in '39 to Virginia, thence to Tuscarawas Co. Ohio, in '43, and to Lee Co., Ills. in 1847, where he first lived in Tempereance Hill settlement. In 1823 he married Miss Rhoda Skinner, and raised two sons and three daughters. During the past six years we had learned to love and respect "Uncle Hale." Very few have been his visits to Amboy when he has not occupied our "old settler's chair," and entertained the occupants of this sanctum by the interesting recitals of days gone by, with which he loved to dwell. His memory was remarkably good, and he was a great reader in his later life. The scencs of the war of 1812 were vivid in his mind; he could recount the leading features of the "whiskey rebellion" in Penn.; picture pioneer life of his early days, tell of the early histopry of Joe Smith with whom he was well acquainted in boyhood; and recount the incidents of the Rebellion while his blood warmed with patriotism. He was a fine type of pioneer life, and from his rude surroundings of frontier strife, boatman, indians, to the quiet days of repose and old age, he had been a conscientious honest man, respected by all who knew him. Peace to his memory. Thus do the pioneers, who braved and endured the hardships of early settlements of our country, go one by one, to their silent grave, and pass from the world's struggles. May we learn of their goodness, and live and love all of their better life!
