- Anderson, Mary Audentia Smith. ANCESTRY AND POSTERITY OF JOSEPH SMITH AND EMMA HALE. Independence, Missouri: Herald Publishing House, 1929, 1958. [FHL Special 929.273 Sm51am] Database compiled by Michael Kennedy of Alpine, UT., Pres. Joseph Smith, Jr. Family Organization.
~Notes by Sean Smith (mustermurk@yahoo.com) I was told that Heman Hale had a falling out with the church and this is why the family moved from Independence (birthplace of Philip) to San Francisco. Philip had said his father was also involved as an academic with the Wisconsin economic writers who influenced the New Deal, but I'm not sure how. I even remember some claim about a connection with the governor of Colorado at that time but this is extremely hazy.
~ At some point after the move the marriage seems to have fallen apart. June apparently took up with a man who philip considered greatly inferior who he had many confrontations with, including, ultimately, a physical one. This is the point when he seems to have turned away from the family, and it's possible that a similar thing happened with Donald. This at any rate is how I interpret the "abandoned' comment.
~ Because they were not raised as Mormons it's unlikely (it seems to me) that this was the cause of conflict between the two brothers. Seems to have been pure politics with maybe a nod to that psychological theory about eldest vs. youngest siblings. I remember watching "Dr.Stangelove" with Philip once and him remarking his eldest brother had been a John Birch Society type and, like the character in the movie, quite taken with the water fluoridation issue. It stuck in my memory since it was one of the few times in his life he mentioned his brother.
~ Philip's attitude towards the Mormons seems to have been one of distanced fascination with the history but not the theology. I think he checked in at Salt Lake City in his later years and gave them some information about himself. He told me about the connection when I was growing up but it was only later I realized how direct it was. I was always more interested in Jedediah Smith who I was told was also a relative.
~ Anyway, not sure if any of this helps in any way but it's nice to share this information with someone. To wrap up I'll attach a fragment from one of Philip's journals describing a trip on the Okavango river in Botswana. I happen to have it on my phone because a friend at home is reading the journals right now and wanted me to know she likes the passage.
