So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • John Burroughs (1617-1678) immigrated from Yarmouth, England aboard the Mary Ann to Salem, MA in 1637. He was a Presbyterian fleeing Oliver Cromwell's England. By the 1640s John Burroughs had married Johanna Jessup (1625-1664) and they had started on their famly of 4 children. In 1652 a group of English New Englanders received permission from Dutch Director Stuyvesant to "plant a town" just west of Flushing on Long Island in Stuyvesant's Mespat jurisdiction. I was called Middleburgh (by the Dutch) and sometimes New Towne (Newtown) to distinguish it from an earlier abandoned settlement in the same area and is in Queens in New York City today. A 12 April 1656 deed purchasing the land of Middleburgh from Indian sachems Rowerowestco and Ponwaukon was signed by 55 Middleburgh residents who agreed to pay the Indians 1s per acre (the "Indian Rate") which included John Burroughs and Edward Jessop (brother-in-law) and John Reeder (his son John was to become a son-in-law) and this land was confirmed to them 25 November 1686 by English Governor Dongan. In May 1662 John Burroughs became Town Clerk of Middleburgh/Newtown succeeding Thomas Lawrence. By 1664 John Burroughs' first wife had died and he married second Elizabeth Petit and they had one child John in 1665 at Newtown. There is this quote concerning John Burroughs: "Upon his removal to Newtown, he became a leading man, and being a skillful penman, a quite rare accomplishment in those days days, he filldd the offic of Town Clerk for 11 years. He appears to have been a resolute character, a warm advocate of popular right, and his sufferings in this behalf have been before related." John Burroughs will was dated 02 July 1678 and it was proved 19 October 1678. Widow Elizabeth Petit Burroughs will was dated 25 November 1678 and it was proved 20 Nov 1679.

Daughter Joanna Burroughs (1649-1694) married John Reeder (1614-1659) and they had 7 children at Newtown, Long Island, NY.
