    • Thirteenth and youngest son of King Edward III of England and Queen Philippa. Created Earl of Buckingham in 1377. Upon his marriage, inherited the title of Earl of Essex. Received the title of Duke of Aumale in 1385, and about the same time was created Duke of Gloucester. Murdered upon the orders of King Richard II of England,
      He became an outspoken and powerful opponent of his nephew. King Richard II, and was responsible for the execution of a number of the king's friends and allies. His actions had far-reaching effects on the life and reign of Richard II, producing a chain of events leading to the Wars of the Roses.
      As Earl of Buckingham, he led an important military campaign against Brittany and its opponents against England's ally, John, Duke of Brittany.
