Notes |
- J. Fred was born December 7, 1872 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He served a mission in Norwich, England from 1898 to 1900. While on his mission, his father decided it was time to pass on his music and jewelry business. J. Fred told his father that he would take over the store upon his return. His half-brother, Royal, was also interested. It was decided to split the music and jewelry business. Royal took over the music store and J. Fred ended up in another building with the jewelry end of the business. Many years later, he opened Daynes Optical Company with 2 of his sons, John F. Daynes and Lincoln A. Daynes.
When J. Fred’s son, Lincoln, completed his mission to South Africa, J. Fred decided to go to Africa to get him and bring him home. They had stopped at a place where Arabs were selling Lebanese rugs. It was a custom to offer a chair and serve a little cup of what they called coffee, which actually looked more like a dark thick syrup. Having this served to them J. Fred told the Arab business owner how awful it was, saying, “This drink you serve people is not good for you.” The man responded that “No one has ever told me that”. Then J. Fred decided to preach the Gospel a bit and explained the Word of Wisdom. He said, “Now look at that rug thrower of yours over there smoking a cigarette.” The Arabs would throw large, heavy rugs up over a bar all day long to reveal the intricate patterns. By so doing they developed large shoulder and arm muscles. “That rug thrower of yours can't be very strong because he is smoking cigarettes. Now I have a son here who doesn't smoke cigarettes, drink coffee or liquor. He could beat that rug thrower of yours in a wrestling match.” Lincoln had been an excellent wrestler but didn’t have the strong build of the rug throwers. The Arab asked, “Do you really think he could?” J. Fred said that he was sure of it and said that he was even willing to bet him. He then put down an American 5 dollar bill, which was worth a lot back then. The man then went over and started speaking Arabic to his rug thrower. Lincoln just stood there looking at his father, not knowing for sure what was going on. The rug thrower put out his cigarette, walked over to Lincoln, felt his arms and his thighs, shook his head and walked back over to the carpets. The Arab owner said, “Well, I guess all bets are off because my rug thrower refuses to fight your son.” J. Fred said, “See, he is afraid to fight my son because he knows he would be defeated. Now that just ought to be a lesson to you that if you give up all this coffee drink and cigarette smoking that you are doing, you would be a stronger, more powerful people.” They then walked out of the place. When Lincoln understood all that had just happened he said, “My gosh, father, you can get me into the worst binds of anyone I've ever known! I don't even think I could lift one of those carpets up over those bars and here you are getting me into a wrestling match. He could have done some real damage to me. He wasn't afraid to fight me, it just wasn't good business and the owner knew it.” Lincoln told his father not to get him into anymore wrestling matches. "Next time you want a wrestling match then you can be the wrestler!" Well, J. Fred just thought it was funny and kept saying, “He was afraid to fight ya”. J. Fred had a conviction of the Word of Wisdom and really believed it made a man stronger!
