  Charlotte Henrietta Campbell married John Benjamin Garrard in 1872. She had 8 children and then abandoned children and left with Charles Maxwell in 1896. She married Charles Maxwell on 19 Jul 1897 in Butte, Silver Bow, Montana and She died in 1914. Per Mary Lovina Campbell-Garrard's Diary, She wrote the following: Tuesday April 14, 1896. Today, Ren (Lorenzo Garrard) came to the house very upset about Charlotte. Told me that she had run off with Charles (Charles Maxwell) yesterday. John (John Benjamin Garrard) came in about a hour later with David and Cyrus in tow, all very upset and angry. Made them all breakfast while Soloman and Joseph hitched the wagon. Charlotte took Mamie, Richard, Lola, Hattie and James with her and Charles when they left. John, Soloman, Joseph, Ren, David and Cyrus headed out mid day to find them. I worry that there will be trouble, all were taking rifles. I will pray for all to return safely. Wednesday April 15, 1896. Sunny day, Susan came by this morning to see if there was news. I had none. We spent the day doing the laundry and going over spelling with the younins. Susan and I said a prayer for all. Thursday April 16, 1896. Not much sun today but still warm. Joseph showed up just after mid day with Hattie and James, said John and the boys were on their trail. They had found Hattie and James with a rancher, they had been sold by Charles to the rancher to be labor for the sum of a horse and 10 silver. Joseph said that John bought them back for the sum of 40 silver and 5 pounds of sugar. I am so upset, but was happy to take them in, we will make room, there is always room. Hattie and James are upset but happy to be home again. Joseph left to return to John and his brothers. I prayed and thanked the lord for returning Hattie and James and to also watch over John and the boys and guide them. I am worried that John will end up shooting Charles, is it bad to wish he would, lord please forgive my thoughts. Friday 17, 1896. Raining on and off today, baking bread this morning, keeps the house nice and warm. Just before dark John and the boys showed up with Mamie, Richard and Lola, all were bone tired and very dirty. My house is very full and quiet tonight as all are currently sleeping. My heart is full as well, I thank the lord for his blessings in bringing all home safely. John says he never saw Charles or Charlotte, they were long gone, having sold and left the young children with a farmer and a rancher along the way. John says they are well on their way to Montana. I am so ashamed of my sister, lord please forgive her. John paid most of his money and supplies to get the children back, times are hard and we will miss the money, but I am happy they are now home with me. John says he will sell Charlotte's house, so that should make up the loss. I will get on my knees tonight and thank the lord for these blessings and yes to watch over my sister as well.
