Stewart The father of Alexander was Andrew Steward. The parent, Alexander who died in 1283 (4th High Steward of Scotland) had three sons: 1. James Steward (5th High Steward of Scotland and progenitor of the royal line of Stewards) 2. John Steward (Ancestor of many noble families of Stewarts, including the Earls of Lennox) and 3. Andrew Steward mentioned in the previous paragraph. The father of Alexander was Walter Steward who died in 1246. In the genealogy prepared by E. S. Stewart in the 1930s and published in the Stewart Clan Magazine is found information concerning some of the Stewards who came to America from England. He stated that the Stewards of New Jersey were descended from the Stewards of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, England, where they were quite numerous in the 16th century. Walter Steward, 3rd High Steward of Scotland, was the first to assume the surname. The father of Walter was Alan (the 2nd High Steward of Scotland) who died in 1204. The father of Alan (the 2nd High Steward of Scotland) was Walter Fitzalan who died in 1177. This Walter, known as Walter Fitzalan, went to Scotland as one of the military aides of King David I. He was the second son of Alan Fitzflaad, a Norman chieftain who came into England with Will, the Conqueror, in 1066, and was given land in Shropshire. He was known as Walter Fitzalan the 1st High Steward of Scotland.
