  BIOGRAPHY: Ancestor of many noble fammilies of Stewarts, including the Earls of Lennox. Ref: http://olivercromwell.com/familytreestewards.html Died at the Falkirk Battle, GIVEN NAMES: Also shown as Jon PREFIX: Also shown as Sir DEATH: Also shown as Died Deceased John died fighting along with William Wallace for the cause of Scottish independence at the battle of Falkirk. A number of famous Scottish families were descended from John. His tomb is still to be seen in the churchyard at Falkirk and is inscribed 'Here lies a Scottish hero, Sir John Stewart who was killed at the battle of Falkirk, 22nd July 1298.' He commanded the archers. The line of his eldest son, Sir Alexander, became Earls of ANGUS, and ended in a female who carried the earldom to the Douglases, who are also Dukes of HAMILTON at the present day.From his second son, Sir Alan Stewart of Darnley, descended the Stewart Earls of LENNOX, ancestors to the consort of Mary Queen of Scots. From Sir Alan also descended the Earls of GALLOWAY. From John Bonkyl's fourth son came the Stewarts of Innermeath in Strathearn, from who descended the Stewart Lords of LORN, the Stewarts of MURTHLY and GRANDTULLY, the Stewart Earls of ATHOL, and the Stewarts of APPIN. From Bonkyl's sixth son, Sir Robert, came the Stewarts of ALLANTON and their cadets. Few families were more distinguished in war and peace than this line, from which were descended the families of Halrig, Barscob, and John, Lord d'Aubigny, famous in the Neapolitan wars under Charles VIII and Louis XII of France. D'Aubigny's father, John Stewart of Darnley, Count d'Evereau, was killed at the siege of Orleans in 1422. The male line of this family ended with the death of Charles, Duke of Lennox in 1672.
