  Sir John Ross, who married Margaret Comyn, second daughter and coheiress of John, Earl of Buchan. He had with her a half of the Earl of Buchan’s heritage in Scotland. Dying s.p. [without heirs], the lands passed to his nephew, William, Earl of Ross. Source: THE SCOTS PEERAGE, ed. by Sir James Balfour Paul, Vol VII, Edinburgh, 1906, p. 235 ------------------------------ Sir John Ross died childless, apparently very soon after his marriage, and his widow seems to have married a Sir William Lindsay. A charter is extant in which the latter gave to the monks of the convent of Deer an annual payment of sixteen shilling to commemorate the the anniversaries of the deaths of his two wives, Alesia and Margaret, Countess of Buchan. If the latter was Margaret Comyn she must have married again soon after the death of her first husband and have survived her second marriage but a short time. Probably to regulate the succession to his lands, Sir John Ross resigned them to the King and got a new infeftment. Either at the death of Sir John Ross or of his widow, the lands passed to his nephew William, who became Earl of Ross in 1333.
