Co ntributions to Shalom Park, Denver Hospice, or the charity of your choice. !OBIT: per Intermountain Jewish News 26 June 2009: Freida Altman Slatkin, member of a pioneering Colorado Jewish famil y, passed away June 6, 2009, at her home in Denver. She was 95.?- Rabbi Selwyn Franklin and Cantor Joel Lichterman off iciated at the service, held June 8 at BMH-BJ. Rabbis Bruce Dollin and Yaakov Meyer and Cantor Martin Goldstein also pa rticipated. Interment followed at Rose Hill Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements. - Daughter Ellen Slatkin said at the service: ?Our mother embodied strength and determination and independence. She de rived this from her heritage ?? the faith of our grandparents and their siblings and our pioneer background. ??You ca n?t live your life in fear,? our mother said. ?Don?t rely on crutches; find you own inner strength.?? Mrs. Slatkin w as born Jan. 18, 1914, to the late Molly and Joseph Louis Altman. Proud of the family?s history in Russia, the Cotopax i colony and in Denver, she regaled her children and grandchildren with many stories. She attended Boulevard Elementa ry in north Denver, Lake Junior High, and graduated from North High in 1931. Although she received a Latin scholarshi p from DU, she had to drop out of college due to the Depression. She worked in a department store and trained as an X -ray technician at St. Anthony?s. Freida married Gordon Slatkin, a Denver attorney, on Dec. 24, 1939. He passed awa y on March 29, 1975. Mrs. Slatkin belonged to numerous organizations including Hadassah, NCJW and the Women?s Leagu e for Peace and Freedom. She loved learning, music, art, poetry and literature. ?Our mother marveled that she wa s born before women had the vote and lived to see Nancy Pelosi sworn in as Speaker of the House,? Ellen said. The wom an who ?wanted to see racial justice become a reality and supported the integration of DPS, had tears in her eyes as sh e watched Barack Obama become president of the US.? Mrs. Slatkin is survived by her children Sander, Buddy (Teena) an d Ellen Slatkin; grandchildren Daniel (Alyson), Ari, Jonathan and Cassie Slatkin, and Betsy DeWall; sister Marcia Helle r; and sister-in-law Barbara (Herbert) Cook.
