• Notes

  Stephen Gates, immigrant ancestor of one branch of the Gates family in America, came from Hingham, England, with his wife and children in the year 1638. They sailed in the DILIGENT of Ipswich, England, John Martin, master. He settled in Hingham, Mass., where he received a grant of three acres for a house lot, twelve acres for a "great lotte", and a three acre planting lot. His house was on Town (now North) Street and was bounded on the North by the street, on the East by William Buckland's land, and on the West by the town swamp. In 1647 he received a grant of 1/2 and acre of salt marsh. June 26, 1648, he sold his house lot and other holdings to William Hersey, but remained in the town for some time before his removal. Stephen Gates and his wife probably did not become members of the Hingham Church until about May 3, 1646, when three of their children were baptized. He was one of the early settlers of Lancaster, Mass, where he subscribed to the town orders April 3, 1654. While living at Lancaster he was admitted as freeman May 14, 1656. He was elected constable, at that time a responsible position. In 1657 he failed to notify the voters of a town meeting. In consequence , he was fined ten pounds, but the fine was remitted when he informed the court that his failure was due to illness. In 1658 trouble between the Gates and whitcomb families broke out because the Whitcomb sons slaughtered three pigs belonging to Stephen Gates. Whitcomb agreed to pay for the swine, but afterwards sought to be released from paying, claiming that he was aged & weak and mean in estate. The court decided that he must pay for the swine.
