So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

Jedediah Allen, eldest known child of Ralph Allen the mason and Esther Swift, b. of record Jan. 3, 1646/7 at Sandwich, Mass. [Sand. VRs] As an adult Jedediah became a prominent Quaker and born 10-years prior to the arrival of the Society of Friends at Sandwich, Mass. thus the reason why he has an actual recorded date of birth at Sandwich, Mass.

By 1668, Jedediah m. Elizabeth Howland, dau. of Henry Howland and his wife Mary, b. circa 1650 at Duxbury, Mass. She was one of the executors of her husband's estate and was living at Shrewsbury on Feb. 8, 1711/12, the date she attested to the inventory of Jedediah's estate (not formally recorded in the New Jersey probate records until 1759.)

      [more detail later]

In Mar. 1695, Jedediah Allen, Peter Tilton and Remembrance Lippincott were grantees of one acre at Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey:

      • to ye use benifitt & behoof of ye poor people belonging to ye Religious Socity of ye people of God called quakers forever and for a place to erect a meeting house and make a burying place." (Mon. Deeds, D:95).

The Shrewsbury Friend's present-day Meeting House and burial ground remain essentially at the same parcel of land recited in the 1695 deed. Jedediah Allen d. testate Jan. 12, 1711/12 at Shrewsbury and is undoubtedly interred in an unmarked grave at that Friend's burying ground.

Jedediah and Elizabeth had thirteen known children, the eldest 10 born at Sandwich, the rest at Shrewsbury: [*1]

      • i. Experience Allen; b. 30 6m [Aug.] 1669; m. Benjamin Field.

      • ii. Ephraim Allen; b. 20 10m [Dec.] 1670; m. [---], Elizabeth (Maddocks) (Denn) Powell, and Hannah (Johnson) (Holden) Leonard.

      • iii. Eliashib Allen; b. 17 8m [Oct.] 1672; d. after 1711; miscalled "Elizabeth" in some records. No record of wife or children.

      • iv. Nathan Allen; b. 2 12m [Feb.] 1673/74; m. Margery Burnet and Martha (Newberry) Davenport.

      • v. Judah Allen; b. 17 8m [Oct.] 1675; m. Deborah Adams.

      • vi. Esther Allen; b. 26 1m [Mar.] 1677; m. James Adams.

      • vii. Ralph Allen; b. 7 11m [Jan.] 1678/79; m. Margaret Denn(e).

      • viii. Henry Allen; b. 24 1m [Mar.] 1679/80; m. Hannah Corlies and Abigail Adams.

      • ix. Mary Allen; b. 15 9m [Nov.] 1681; m. Daniel Wells.

      • x. Patience Allen; b. 8 3m [May] 1683; m. Samuel Tilton.

      • xi. Meribah Allen; b. 12 9m [Nov.] 1686; m. William Thorn.

      • xii. Jonathan Allen, twin; b. 16 Oct. 1689; m. Mary Corlies.

      • xiii. David Allen, twin; b. 16 Oct. 1689; m. Mary Powell and Hannah Champnes or Chambless.

[*1] The six oldest children are recorded in the Sandwich Friends records at Sandwich Mass. On Nov. 8, 1683 Job Almy of Portsmouth, RI sold to Jedediah Allen of Sandwich, Mass., a share of land at the township of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, in the then constituted Province of East Jersey. This is followed in early 1686 in the East Jersey Deeds (Lib. A:305) with a "Record of the births of the [ten] children of Jedediah Allen and wife Elizabeth, born at Sandweth, Plymouth Colony, New England" with minor variation in dates from the prior Sandwich Friends record.

The dates used in this memorial are from the aforesaid East Jersey record, which presumably reflect dates specifically rendered by Jedediah for purposes of legal recordation. The dates are in the characteristic numerical-only format used by Quakers. However, the children were all born under the pre-1752 old Julian calendar. First child Experience was born in the 6th month of 1669, in which the 1st month of the then English calendar was March, and Mar. 25th was the first day of the new year. Thus she was born in the 6th month then known as August in the Julian calendar, not the 6th month now known as June in the modern Gregorian calendar. The children's record of births in the East Jersey records is followed on Oct. 28, 1687 by Jedediah receiving a patent deed for 410 acres at Monmouth County "part as headland for himself, wife and ten children, and part as to an old settler or patentee." In the interim, dau. Meribah was born at Shrewsbury in late 1686.

"Cohanim" is the highest Jewish caste, and are traditionally high priests. The surnames Cohen, Katz, and Kaplan are almost always Cohanim.

In '03, the human genome's final draft was completed. It was generated based on DNA samples from five anonymous donors who were only classified by race and sex.

Maiden names can sometimes be found by looking at her husband's land/court records. Traditionally, the woman's father would sell land to her new husband for a low price.

Bounty land warrant application files show if your ancestor served wartime service between 1775 -1855 and often contain documents with lots of genealogical information.

Naming traditions in the UK give the 1st son the name of the paternal grandfather, 2nd son the name of the maternal grandfather, and the 3rd son the name of the father.

Jedediah Allen 1646-1711 and Elizabeth Howland Allen 1646-1713
      403. Jedediah2 Allen, son of Ralph1, b. Jan. 3, 1646/7, at Sandwich; d. Jan. 21, 1711/2, at Shrewsbury, N. J.; md. abt. 1668-9 Elizabeth Howland. dau. of Henry and Mary (Newland) Howland, b. abt. 164-; d. after 1713. (Ply. Co. Wills, Vol. 3, pt. 2, p. 10; Howland Gen.: 68-69 ; NEHGR 25:146; AGDR:165). The Sandwich Friends' Register of Births and Marriages has a partial index showing the marriage of Jedediah Allen as on page 61, but that page is one of many that are missing from the book. He was a prominent member of the Quaker meeting at Sandwich, and is occasionally mentioned in the town records. An undated description of the lands of Jedediah Allen, probably entered 1670-75 under a resolution of October, 1658, lists nine pieces, aggregating 28 acres. (Sand. T. R.-Proprs. Rec.). On Apr. 23, 1675, a list of those holding Town rights includes "Jeedididath Allen." On Apr. 1, 1678 he, with two others from the western part of the town, was chosen to meet three from the eastern part and settle the boundaries of Scorton and Town's Necks. (Sand. T. R. I :8o, 175). On Nov. 8, 1683, Job Almy of Portsmouth, R.I., conveyed to Jedidiah Allen of Sandwich, in New Plymouth Colony, for £45, most of his share of land in Shrewsbury, N'. J., and shortly thereafter Jedediah moved with his family to their new home. On part of this purchase was built the homfestead in which he was living at the time of his death, and which he left to his son David. The births of ten children of Jedediah, at "Sandweth," are noted in East Jersey records, and five of them are entered, in the Sandwich Quaker register, although there the dates of the two oldest are a year later than stated in the former volume. The three fully legible birth items in the old family Bible agree with the New Jersey records. The births of the three born after the removal of the family from Sandwich appear-in Shrewsbury records. (EJD A:305 ; Sandwich, M. M. Rec., 60:3; SHGM 1:265; NEHGR 25:146). The first appearance of Jedediah's name as a resident of New Jersey is under date of May 15, 1685, when he and George Hulett were made administrators of the estate of Joseph Parker of Shrewsbury. However, he was present at a meeting of Friends at Sandwich on June 5, 1685, when he presented two books to the organization. (NJA 23:353; Sand. M. M. Rec. 40:38). In April, 1686 he was chosen to represent Shrewsbury in the East Jersey Assembly, and served for several years. (NJA 13:143; 21:159). After the consolidation of East and West Jersey in 1703, he was a member of the first Colonial Assembly. He was indicted in May, 1705, for his utterances about the unpopular Gov. Cornbury, but apparently was never brought to trial. (Jour, and Votes of House of Rep. of N. J., 1703-9, p. 3; Field's Prov. Courts of N. J. 153-4). He was commissioned a Justice of the Peace for Monmouth County Dec. 26, 1699, and sat as a Justice in the County Court for several sessions. (EJD-Com. C:317, 326; MnCt 1:111, 123, &c.). He owned a large amount of land in Shrewsbury and Freehold, some of which he acquired by grant from the Proprietors and some by purchase. (EJD). An account of him in "The Friend" for 1855 (p. 268) states that he was a minister of the gospel among the Friends of Shrewsbury as early as 1685, and from that time on was usually a delegate to the Yearly Meeting at Philadelphia. At the 1688 Meeting he told of his experiences on a recent trip to New England.
In Sept., 1694, charged before the county court with having refused to serve as Constable for Shrewsbury after being duly chosen, Allen replied that those who "did belong or pretend to holy orders" were exempt from such duties, and others testified that he was esteemed "a teacher among their sect." (MnCt 1:58, 61). On Mar. 5, 1695, Jedediah Allen, Peter Tilton and Remembrance Lippingot were named as grantees in a deed for one acre at Shrewsbury "to ye use benifitt & behoof of ye poor people belonging to ve Religious Socity of ye people of God called quakers forever and for a place to erect a meeting house and make a burying place." (MnD D:95). His will, Sept. 15, 1711-Feb. 6, 1711/2, names his wife Elizabeth and twelve children, the wife to be executrix. It also names two grandchildren and Mary, daughter of John Allen of Woodbridge. No mention is made of his deceased daughter Experience or her heirs. The inventory of his personal estate totals £1454:7:5, a very considerable amount for that period. (NJW-Unrec. 11:311; 12:310).
