In order to make the journey across the Plains, she came as a nurse-maid to some of Lorenzo D. Young 's children and worked for him after she arrived in Salt Lake City. She married Briant Stringham who had helped her mother and family to cross the Plains. She supported her husband in plural marriage to his three other wives. (Two of them were her sisters.) Before her mother died, she asked Briant to take charge of her family, who were in a destitute condition . Briant and Susan took her children into their home and raised them along with their ten children. Susan was frail of body but strong of mind and purpose . She fed, clothed and paid to have her children educated as there were no public schools. She was strong in the faith and active in Sunday School, the Primary, and in the Relief Society organization. She was a teacher to the youngest class in Sunday School and also taught in the Primary. She visited the homes of the Saints and held leadership positions in the church. When the movement for the culture of the silkworm was started, Susan became an enthusiastic exponent of the enterprise. Her work with raising silkworms and in spinning silk culminated in her receiving the first award for silk produced and exhibited at the Territorial Fair of 1894. After her husband's death she secured a knitting machine and manufactured wool socks, and sold them at the 13th Ward Co-op and other stores in the city. She said that she was compelled to learn many things besides taking care of children, such as how to dry and can food. Molasses was used to sweeten her preserves. During her lifetime she learned the art of making dresses, bonnets, hats, corsets, stocking, coats, shirts, pants, rag carpets, bed quilts, crochet lace and do embroidery work.
