- BIOGRAPHY: Mary's parents were born in England but were early settlers of Sudbury. Sudbury was incorporated in 1639. At that time, the boundaries of Sudbury included (by 1653) all what is now of Wayland (which split off in 1780), and parts of Framingham, Marlborough, Stow and Maynard. John Stone is listed multiple times in the book by Alfred S. Hudson entitled "The history of Sudbury, Massachusetts, 1638-1889." He is listed on page 29 as one of the very first settlers of Sudbury, living there as no later than about 1638 or 1639. Page 27 mentions that he was first a settler of Watertown, and a son-in-law of Elder Edward How. This book was published by Hudson in 1889, and ever since then there has been a discussion of who John Stone's wife was. That her first name was Anne is certain, but her maiden name has been the subject of controversy since Hudson published his book in 1889. It is almost certain that she was not Anne How. Her correct maiden name is still a subject of controversy.
Regardless, John and Anne had at least four children while living in Sudbury, many of whom are listed in Sudbury vital records, including Hannah in 1640, Daniel in 1644, David in 1646, Margaret in 1653, Tabitha in 1655, Sarah in 1657, and Nathaniel in 1660. Missing from this list are John, Mary, and Elizabeth. It is likely that all the children born after David were actually born in what became Framingham. On Wikipedia, it says that Framingham, sited on the ancient trail known as the Old Connecticut Path, was first settled when John Stone settled on the west bank of the Sudbury River in 1647, but Framingham wasn't incorporated until 1700.
However, there is a good piece of evidence which establishes Mary as a daughter of John Stone and his wife Anne. In the book, "Gregory Stone genealogy : ancestry and descendants of Dea. Gregory Stone of Cambridge, Mass., 1320-1917" which can be found on ancestry.com, on page 70, the author mentions a deed whereby Isaac Hunt, Ebenezer Hunt, John Fox, Nathaniel Fox, and John and Hannah Fletcher sold their 1/6 interest in the house and lands of their grandfather John Stone in 1705.
Mary's birth year listed below is just an estimate.
She married Isaac Hunt in 1667 in Concord, and it appears she lived in Concord for the rest of her life. She and Isaac were only married 13 years before his death in 1680, leaving behind several small children. Their 5 children, including only 1 daughter, are listed in Concord vital records:
Hunt, Isacke, s. Isacke and Mary, Jan. 12, 1668.
Hunt, Hanna, d. Isack and Mary, June 5, 1670.
Hunt, Samewell, s. Isaac and Mary, Oct. 26, 1672.
Hunt, Isaac, s. Isaac and Mary, Nov. 18, 1675.
Hunt, Ebenesar, s. Isaac and Mary, July 2, 1677.
Unfortunately, Isaac died quite young. His death is listed in Concord vital records:
Hunt, Isaac, 12: 10m: 1680.
Son Isaac was able to have a relatively large family, but his other children had few or no children.
Mary remarried after Isaac's death. Mary's second marriage is listed in Concord vital records:
Hunt, Mary, and Eliphalt Fox, 30: 9m: 1681.
Mary was his second wife. With Eliphalt, Mary had at least two, perhaps three more sons, two of which are listed in Concord vital records:
Fox, Jno, s. Eliphalett, 15: 7m: 1682 (also recorded as Fox, John, s. Elifelet and Mary, Oct. ––, 1682.)
Fox, Nathaniel, s. Eliphalet, 18: 12m: 1683.
There is no death record for Mary, but it appears that her husband married a third time in 1702, so she likely died before this time. Eliphalet had three wives, all named Mary. The record in Concord vital records for his third marriage looks like this:
Fox, Eliphelit, and Mary Coleburn, Apr. 15, 1702. Colburn was her married name. Her maiden name was Bishop.
