| Notes |
- Lieut. James Lewis, born in England, md. Sarah Lane, the first white child born in Scituate, 31 Oct, 1655. Lived in Barnstable and had a family of ten children.
In the Genealogical notes of the Barnstable families page 14 the following may be found: No man in Barnstable brought up his family better than Lieut. Lewis. All of his ten children were well educated for the times, and all became useful and respectable men and women. The secret of his success was soon told. he never neglected his business. Every year he added a new field to his estate, and though one of the most generous of fathers, he ranked among the wealthy in 1703.
Born in 1631, he was 72 years old when he died. His son Lieut Eben Lewis was equally wealthy. James Lewis, when a lad, was bound an apprentice to a blacksmith, and in afterlife, when he became distinguished, he thought it not derogatory to his character to blow the bellows or swing a hammer.
The headstones which mark his grave and that of his wife are still to be seen in the old cemetery in Barnstable.
He was industrious and Frugal. When he could not earn a shilling he was content if he earned a penny which he put to good use. By careful management he accumulated a good estate. In 1655, his house lot, containing twelve acres, was the lot on the west of Taylor's Lane. It remains very nearly in the same condition that it was in 1655. The successive owners have been James Lewis, and his son George Lewis, who bequeathed it to his daughter Mercy Taylor and she to hoer daughter Alice, wife of the late Isaac Bacon.
From him it passed into the hands of Mr. Williams of Boston in payment of a debt of Isaac Bacon, Jr. Williams sold it to the late David Crocker, esq.
He was Lieutenant of the Military Company of Barnstable many years, and probably a soldier in Phillip's War for his heirs were proprietors of Gorham town. he was one of the slect men in 1679, '89, and '90.
James lived first in Scituate MA, where he joined the church in 1635. Lt. James Lewis was admitted freeman on 1 June 1658. He removed to Barnstable MA, where he was Lieutenant of the militia. He probably served in King Philip's war, because his heirs were proprietors of Gorham. He was selectman 1660, 1679, 1681, 1689 and 1690. He was also Justice of the "Select Court".
"Jan. 18, 1699, Capt. Joseph Lothrop, aged about 75, Mr. John Howland, aged about 77, and Lieut. James Lewes, aged 68, old men, all June 18th, saith the record, joined the church in Barnstable."
The will of Lieut. James Lewes Sr. is dated 8 May 1713, proved 17 Oct 1713. He gave his son George Lewes "one half of my dwelling-house and barn, and one-half of lands thereunto adjoining," and he confirms his former deed of gift of the other half. He names sons Ebenezer, Samuel, James, John and Joseph and daughters Sarah Waterman, Susanna Beals, Mary Linkhorn, and Hannah Lunbard. He appointed his four sons executors. [1]
