So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

John Lewis was an inhabitant of Charlestown, Mass., in 1634, when he was admitted to the church there July 10, 1644, and soon after removed to Malden where he was one of the first settlers in 1635-1636. He had four acres of planting land and a ten acre lot on the Mystic side in 1637. In all he was the owner of six parcels of land. He must of been a man of some means. The name of his first wife was Marguerite, who was admitted to the church in Charlestown, 7 July 1638. She died April 10, 1649. He married (second) Mary Browne, daughter of Abraham Browne, of Watertown. Married 10 April 1650.
Children: John, Joseph, Mary, twins Samuel and Elizabeth, Sarah, Abraham, Jonathan, Mary, Hannah, Isaac and Trial.

      FIND A GRAVE NOTES:
Born by about 1613 (based on estimated date of marriage). Came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 (based on admission as an inhabitant of Charlestown). First settled in Charlestown; later moved to Malden MA.
Died [blank] September 1657 (from Malden records)or [blank] October 1657 (from inventory).
MARRIAGE: (1) By 1638 Margaret _____. She died at Malden on 10 April 1649.
      (2) Malden 10 April 1650 Mary Brown, daughter of ABRAHAM BROWN {1631, Watertown}. She married (2) by 1663 John Cutler of Woburn
In 1961 Donald Lines Jacobus attempted to find the parentage of a Joseph Lewis of Simsbury, Connecticut. After disposing of some suggestions relating to John Lewis of New London, Jacobus took note of a John Lewis of Windsor. He then pointed out that Joseph Lewis of Simsbury had married at Windsor, and then proposed the theory that these two men might be brothers. Jacobus then presented the abstract of the deed, cited above, that provides the evidence that John Lewis of Windsor was the son of the John Lewis who is the subject of this sketch.
Closer examination of this deed and of three others, also cited above, leads to the conclusion that Joseph Lewis of Simsbury was not brother of John Lewis of Windsor. The deed of 26 August 1695 provides evidence for nine children of the immigrant John Lewis: Samuel, Hannah (who married John Melvin), John, Abraham, Elizabeth (who married Bryant Bredane), Mary (who married Samuel Penfield), Sarah (who married Joseph Brabrook), Trial and Isaac.
This deed, which lists nine heirs, gives the appearance of being a complete list of the heirs, inasmuch as it went to the trouble of obtaining a power of attorney from a brother in Connecticut, and also of listing a representative of the heirs of another brother already deceased. Were Joseph Lewis of Simsbury, who had died in 1680, another sibling, his heirs surely would also have been represented in this instrument. We conclude that Joseph Lewis of Simsbury was not a son of the subject of this sketch.
