"Here is what Debbie Inglis sent me in the mail."
Margaret McMurtrie died 18th Oct 1838 aged 98.
Ayr Advertiser 25th Oct 1838.
At Dailly on 17th inst Margaret Mc Murtrie widow of James Davidson. She was born on June 22, 1740 and married June 22nd 1761. She was the mother of 12 children and before her death could enumerate nearly 450 children, grandchildren, great grand children and great great grand children. She saw 7 generations, had 4 sets of teeth, and although bedridden for the last 8 years retained her faculities to the last and was able to express her sense of divine goodness and her entire reliance on the Lord Jesus Christ.
New Style and Old Style
In 1752 the Gregorian calendar was adopted in great Britain by the omission of 11 days. Sep 3rd becoming Sep 14th. The difference after 1800 was 12 days, and after 1900 13 days.
Dailly Kirk Session records
By an act of parliament the Julian form of the ther or old stile ends the second day of September 1752 and the Gregorian or new Stile succeeds in place thereof by which seven days are taken out of the said month of September for this year.
8th May 1785 Dailly Kirk Sessions Records
It is our design to have the sacrament of the Lord's supper dispensed in this place upon the last Sabbath of May old style which this year is the 5th of June New style.
Both styles were often referred to long after the change. Margaret was married on 2nd of July 1761 New Style, and it looks as if she converted that date to Old Style by counting back 11 days (inclusive of 2nd July and 22nd June) and getting 22nd of June, her birthday.
Seven Generations
Margaret certainly saw seven generations:
1. Her grandfather (name unknown)
2. Her father Robert McMurtrie
3. Herself (born 1740 in Blair) and husband James Davidson, married 1761 at Bargany
4. Son Andrew (born 1762 Bargany), married to Mary Craig.
5. Grandson James Davidson (Born 1785 Kilgrammie) married to Ann Blair.
6. Great Grandson Andrew Davidson (Born 1810 Kilgrammie) married Jean Bowie.
7. Great Great Granddaughter Annie Davidson (Born 1836 Old Rome) who married William Ross.
Number of Descendents
I have only been able to trace the descendants of two of her children, Andrew and Joseph, and counted well over a hundred descendents born before Margaret died in 1838. So it is possible, given the large families in those days, that she had 450 descendants. It is a great mystery to me where the other Davidsons went.
Annals of the Parish by John Galt
This book tells of the events in the ministry of Rev Michah Balquhidder in an Ayrshire Parish from 1760 until he retires in 1810. It describes 50 years of the times Margaret and James lived through. Do read it.
